oVERFLOw 1st Consortium meeting (6 month)

Due to situation with COVID-19, a meeting was held in Zagreb for the consortium partners which were able to arrive to the venue location. For those unable to participate physically, an on-line participation was arranged.

The activities in obtaining historical data from both case study areas, as well as the existing data necessary for the development of downscaled climate scenarios were presented. It was noted that the input necessary for development of embankment fragility curves are mostly linked to the predicted water waveheights and their duration.

In addition to the situation with COVID-19, city of Zagreb was struck on March 22nd by an earthquake of high magnitude. Due to earthquake, UNIZAG GF was collaborating with Croatian Waters in assessing the condition of 141 km of flood protection embankments, and 19 km of retentions, in wider area of city of Zagreb. The applied assessment methodology has a ground peneetrating radar (GPR) investigations in focus, and it is exactly this method which will be further developed within the WP3 of the project. UNIZAG GF conducted these investigations during March and April, followed by the data interpretation. To increase the assessment potential of this first-pass assessment method, UNIZAG GF currently developes AI-based tools which utilize a pattern recognition technique to search for various types of anomalies within the flood protection embankments.

It was mentioned that the Dutch stakeholders have interest for investigation of the secondary embankments which are in worse condition when compared to primary embankments.

Visit to city of Karlovac

Visit to the case study  of city of Karlovac, in order to select the most vulnerable bridges crossing the Kupa river, was organized on June 5th 2020. A short meeting with representatives of Croatian Roads was held at their offices, followed by the visit to 4 bridges in the city center. The consortium members were accompanied by the representative of Croatian road, who pointed out to bridge – related issues they, as stakeholders, have to deal with.

The consortium members decided that the bridges which will be instrumented and tested in the following phase are:road bridge on state road DC 1 (‘prilaz Vjeceslava Holjevca’) and road bridge on local road (‘Banijski bridge’)

After a detailed inspection of these bridges, it was shown that the structure of both bridges is burdened by many problems, including foundation scouring, bad condition of deck, drainage issues etc. In the same time, these bridges are most important transportation infrastructure assets in the city of Karlovac. The representatives of stakeholders will send a documentation for these bridges which will serve as a starting point for investigation activities.

Consortium meeting in Zagreb

oVERFLOw project meeting was organized as a two-day event at the at Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb. The representatives of all consortium institutions attended the meeting. The focus of the meeting was on the discussion of the area covered with climate change downscaling and subsequent flood scenarios.
